Our manatee friends are dying at an alarming rate. Close to 200 manatee deaths have been reported around Florida over the past few weeks, leaving scientists to contemplate the cause. The ecosystem of the Indian River Lagoon is experiencing an epic collapse. Hundreds of dead pelicans have also been recovered. Red tide is the latest speculation. The microscopic blooming of algae is killing the seagrass which manatees need to survive. Wildlife experts are fiercely examining specimens for clues. Indications are that the manatees are in effect drowning, perhaps due to shock. No virus or disease has been implicated, but the investigation continues as the manatee struggle to survive.
