Since 1980, the arctic has lost 40 percent of it’s summer sea ice. Arctic warming is so advanced that summer sea ice could completely vanish decades earlier than previously imagined. The average surface temperature worldwide has risen nearly one degree in four decades. The impact is being felt in localities everywhere as people find themselves flooded, heated, drought ridden, storm riding and even frozen. The continuing rise in extreme weather events has scientists pointing to warming as the culprit. Check out Julia Whitty’s account of her Arctic journey at Mother Jones.
